Photography workshop in New Jersey with Michael S. Miller

See The Forest Through The Lens
Saturday, June,2
9:00am - 2:00pm
Meet at Stokes State Forest and spend the day exploring Stokes State Forest and the Delaware Water Gap Area.  You will capture the trees, ferns, cascades and natural light while learning composition and exposure in one of New Jersey's natural wonders. This creative exploration is designed for those photographers with basic digital skills who want to develop their creative skills.
The air becomes noticeably chiller when you enter Tillman's Ravine, with its cool evergreen forest of eastern hemlocks, mountain laurel and ferns along side the steep slopes carved by the rushing wters of Tillman's Brook.  Explore the eastern hemlocks and ferns clinging to rock crevics, a 10 foot cascade, and rushing water over the red rocks of the Kittatinny Ridge all through your camera lens.
If time permits we will head up the road two miles to Buttermilk falls, a 80-90 foot cascade.  This spectacular waterfall is the only waterfall in New Jersey, apart from Great falls, with a developed viewing area.

photography class for available light portraits in New Jersey

Available Light Portrait Photography
Two Sessions (5 hours total)
Monday, April 23 & April 30        6:30-9:00pm
Belmar Arts Council
608 River Road
Belmar, NJ
As with so many aspects of life, simpler is usually better and with available light portrait photography what could be simpler?

The beauty of available light is that it is everywhere!  Any time of day!  This workshop will develop your ability to see the quality of light, make effective and quality portraits using the light that is provided.  Along with light you will learn why tonality, composition and color are important to a memorable portrait.

During the first session you will learn how to process what works and what doesn’t work.  You will explore and learn about existing light – hard, soft, bounced, reflected, and diffused.    Your goal is to capture the essence of each person through light and gesture.

With the principles learned during the first session, you will put to practice theses skills on your own and then bring these images for the second session and learn how to optimize your images in Adobe Lightroom.

A strong understanding of your digital camera and the ability to navigate Adobe Lightroom or photoshop is a must.  All students must have a DSLR and a laptop.
